Broadening investment horizons, Podcast, Articles of the week
This week’s Twin Petes Podcast saw Citywire’s Algy Hall join me, Henry and Peter to talk about elite companies.
Algy and I worked together at the Investors’ Chronicle. He is a great investment writer who also has a real skill and passion for stock screening which he has written about in his book Four Ways to Beat the Market.
Around a year ago, I joined Algy and his colleagues Dan Grote and Miles Costello to become part of Citywire’s Elite Companies project. Citywire has been ranking fund managers for years and it now ranks companies on the basis of how heavily backed they are by the world’s best fund managers. In short, it is all about following the smart money.
For me, this has been a great project to work on. It has opened my eyes to the opportunities that exist in the shares of companies across the world. I have written about subjects such as Chinese electric vehicles, artificial intelligence, Indian and Asian markets, oil companies and some UK ones as well.
While I am not allowed to own individual shares that I write about, my research and writings have led me to gain exposure to themes via exchange traded funds (ETFs). For example, Vaneck Vectors Semiconductor UCITS ETF (LSE:SMGB), iShares MSCI India UCITS ETF (LSE:IIND) and X-trackers (IE) PLC X MSCI Nordic (LSE:XDN0) have all become part of my portfolio over the last year on the back of learning more about these sectors and markets.
I think Elite Companies is a great source of ideas for investors looking to broaden their horizons and discover stocks that not many people are talking or writing about. You can sign up for our free weekly newsletter here.
